Mike Beall is the Director of Gear Learning, a game development studio within the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. Over his career, he has led the design and development of many learning games across a variety of domains including affective neuroscience, astrophysics, regenerative medicine, implicit bias, and environmental science. Mike’s fundamental belief is that the design of impactful learning games is based on proven instructional methods, emerging research, and sound pedagogy. Over the years, Mike has honed his ability to work effectively with faculty, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders through an iterative approach to map gameplay mechanics to a variety of learning objectives. Beyond creating games themselves, Mike also works closely with outreach organizations to engage with the local communities to learn through playing games and to inform the design of future games through focus groups and playtesting.
