CoolStreet @ ISTE 13: Serious Games Reinforce Basic Micro-Economic Principals

Pizza Battles - Review previous battles or start a new one
CoolStreet is a "Serious Game" in which players own competing pizza shops

Promethean, a global education company dedicated to elevate the interactivity of classrooms, is launching its free "Serious Game" CoolStreet at ISTE 2013, being held this week in San Antonio, Texas.

CoolStreet is a cloud-based micro-economic simulation game in which players own competing pizza shops on the same street.  Pizza shop owners contend for business against each other by configuring their shops in such a way as to maximize market share and earnings.

After the players setup their pizza shops, the organizer/teacher opens the CoolStreet for business and thousands of customers begin roaming the street, choosing pizza shops based on their own individual preferences.

During the game, players are encouraged to review the financial statements, growth charts and operational statistics in order to make store changes to capture market share.

In addition, each pizza shop is taken public with earnings reports being reported periodically to indicate progress. Players then trade stock in the shops while business analysts make buying and selling recommendations based on financial performance.

Designed to teach basic principles of micro-economics in an immersive and fun environment, CoolStreet is a free Windows 8 Store app and its development was guided by Promethean’s alliance with Microsoft.

With the release of CoolStreet, Promethean demonstrates how a connected learning environment can be created in a mixed digital device classroom. The app allows teachers to take advantage of mobile devices, ActivBoards, ActivTables and laptops to complete a simulation that reinforces basic economic principals through practical application.

“The future of education is about building communities of knowledge and environments where learning and teaching are flexible and natural. This is precisely what CoolStreet demonstrates,” said Lupita Knittel, Chief Marketing Officer, Promethean. “This simulation creates a connected classroom and delivers a wholly different – 21st Century – learning exchange.”

During ISTE13, educators can visit the Promethean booth to gather strategies and ideas on how to leverage any type of technology to expand the classroom learning environment.
